About This Opportunity

We are seeking a committed and professional Coroner’s Officer to support HM Senior Coroner and Assistant Coroners in the delivery of a statutory Coroners Service across Cumbria. This is a challenging and rewarding role involving the investigation and case management of unexplained or unnatural deaths, working closely with bereaved families and a wide range of partner agencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a personal caseload of coronial investigations and inquests, including complex and sensitive cases
  • Support HM Coroner in fulfilling statutory duties from initial referral through to inquest conclusion
  • Liaise with bereaved families, providing clear, compassionate guidance and regular case updates
  • Gather, review and manage evidence including statements and reports from medical, legal and investigative agencies
  • Work closely with police, healthcare professionals, legal representatives and other Properly Interested Persons
  • Prepare and coordinate inquest files, witness lists and evidence bundles
  • Arrange specialist services such as post‑mortems, expert reports and translations, in line with HM Coroner’s directions
  • Ensure cases are progressed, concluded and recorded accurately in line with legal and procedural requirements

This role requires professionalism, resilience, excellent communication skills and the ability to manage sensitive information in a judicial environment.
