About this opportunity

We are seeking to appoint two Consultants in Public Health / Consultants in Public Health Medicine to join our Public Health team. These are full time posts, working across the Council, community and wider partners to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of our communities and address inequality. You will have the opportunity to shape, influence and lead key areas of work within the Council Plan and our Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy. As well as delivering the Council’s statutory duties, you will be responsible for shaping and commissioning significant strategic programmes and services and working with our local communities and partners to lead and enable change. You will have the opportunities to shape and develop our priorities and ways of working as a team, working as part of a Council that is committed to putting health and wellbeing at the heart of everything we do.

Although all public health consultants are generalists, you will lead on a specific portfolio of work which may change over time depending on priorities. Two posts are being appointed to, with portfolios covering health protection, substance misuse, input to the new Cumberland Health Determinants Research Collaborative (HDRC), sexual health, public health training and workforce development, and input to tackling the wider determinants of health including poverty. While exact details of the make-up of the two portfolios are negotiable, it is initially expected that one post will incorporate 0.5 FTE providing public health leadership to the new Cumberland Health Determinants Research Collaborative. This post is fixed term until the end of December 2028 in the first instance. The second post, which is initially expected to include the lead role for health protection, is permanent. Both are politically restricted posts.
