Overview
The audit committee is a key component of Cumberland Council’s corporate governance framework. It provides an independent, high‑level focus on the audit, assurance and reporting arrangements that underpin good governance and financial standards. The Council seeks an Independent Member to join the committee and bring specialist knowledge and skills to the process while maintaining a politically independent stance.
Responsibilities
- Attend formal Audit Committee meetings in person – typically six per year – and prepare by reviewing agenda papers and supporting information.
- Provide independent assurance on the adequacy of the risk management framework and internal control environment.
- Review and oversee internal and external audit arrangements and ensure effective assurance processes.
- Contribute to discussions on governance, risk management and financial reporting, offering constructive challenge and external perspective.
Qualifications and Experience
- Some knowledge of local government or large, complex organisations at a senior level.
- Knowledge and understanding of public sector finances, risk management, corporate governance and the roles of internal and external audit.
- High standards of personal integrity and the ability to act objectively, independently and impartially.
- Sound questioning, analytical and decision‑making skills.
- Good communication skills and the ability to contribute effectively to discussions.
- Respect for confidentiality and a commitment to compliance with Council policies.
Eligibility Restrictions
Individuals who have been a member or officer of Cumberland Council within the last five years are ineligible. Individuals who are related to, or a close friend of, a current member or officer of the Council are ineligible.
