Join Cumberland Council as a Highways Area Steward. This is a Supervisory role. Step into a key supervisory role at the heart of our highways service. Cumberland Council is looking for an organised, confident, and experienced Highways Area Steward to lead frontline teams and ensure the effective delivery of essential maintenance across the network. You’ll oversee up to 15 staff, coordinating the planning, execution, and quality assurance of works including carriageways, footways, drainage, structures, and reactive repairs. As the primary point of contact for councillors, residents, and partner organisations, you’ll uphold high standards of safety, performance, and customer service while ensuring that all works meet required specifications.
Responsibilities
- Oversee up to 15 staff and supervise frontline teams
- Coordinate planning, execution, and quality assurance of highway works
- Manage maintenance across carriageways, footways, drainage, structures and reactive repairs
- Ensure works meet required specifications and standards
- Uphold high standards of safety, performance, and customer service
- Act as the primary contact for councillors, residents, and partner organisations
Who We’re Looking For
- HND/HNC in Civil Engineering or significant experience in highway maintenance
- Strong leadership and organisational skills
- Comfortable managing resources and liaising with stakeholders
- Experience contributing to winter service operations
