About us

Cultureshock is a creative media agency with more than 20 years of experience working with cultural institutions and their partners, including global brands, hotels and luxury lifestyle clients.

We have more than 30 creative and publishing specialists in our London office, as well as representatives in LA and New York, many of whom have worked with some of the leading brands in the world.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, motivated, calm and approachable subeditor to join our agency team.

In brief, the role is to support the Chief subeditor editor in the production of a fast-paced and diverse publishing programme. This includes magazines, annual reviews, books, proposals and digital/social media campaigns. 

High levels of organisation, attention to detail and a passion for culture and publishing are essential.

Responsibilities include

  • Copy edit, layout sub, fact-check and proof copy, perform accessibility testing and accurately incorporate and verify reviewers’ changes
  • Write captivating headlines, standfirsts, captions and any other page furniture as required
  • Support editors, project managers and chief subeditor on liaising with clients and external contractors
  • Work with the chief subeditor to create and manage schedules, ensure they are met and communicate any changes to relevant staff and clients where necessary
  • Work with the chief subeditor to manage style guides and other quality control tools, and ensure they are implemented
  • Work with the chief subeditor to review best practice for storage and processes, suggesting improvements where necessary
  • Deputise for chief subeditor when needed to oversee freelance subeditors and check their work

Experience and Essential skills

  • 3+ years experience minimum
  • A strong background in sub editing and magazine print layout, with meticulous attention to detail and the ability to edit quickly and accurately
  • Excellent professional proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Acrobat, Google Docs and Microsoft Office
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively across teams and with clients
  • Excellent time management skills
  • The ability to work quickly and calmly under pressure
  • Professional experience working with the Associated Press Stylebook
  • An interest in the arts and culture is highly desirable
  • Grasp of media law
