As part of our Design Engineering team you will design a wide range of products ensuring compliance with client specifications, legislative requirements, quality and HSE standards. You will be required to work independently or as part of a team to develop new or existing products that meet the mechanical technical requirements of form, fit and function. You will have a professional approach allowing you to successfully interface with customers and suppliers to ensure activities are completed to meet or improve program, cost and quality expectations.

JOB PURPOSE

  • To ensure on time delivery of Right First Time compliant designs.
  • To be a Technical Signatory for checking various engineering deliverables.
  • To design a wide range of bespoke products ensuring compliance with client specifications, legislative requirements, quality and HSE standards.
  • To work independently or as part of a team to develop new or existing products that meet the mechanical technical requirements of form, fit and function.
  • To provide a professional mechanical engineering service to the business and so interface with customers and suppliers to ensure activities are completed to meet or improve program, cost and quality expectations.
  • To provide a point of contact for support and advice to other members of the design team and across the company as a whole.
  • To ensure work is completed efficiently to project timescales and to acceptable standards.
  • To promote value engineering activity and cost reduction at all levels.
  • To support development of Engineering methods and capability.
  • To offer innovative solutions to difficult problems.

JOB ACTIVITIES

  • To provide the technical input for engineering purchase specifications.
  • To generate technical reports, calculations and design schemes.
  • Check and approve design schemes, customer calculations, subcontract technical submissions and ensure quality and consistency of submissions in line with current working practices and standards are maintained.
  • Maintain job records in accordance with company norms and practices.
  • In line with business process organise and attend engineering/project meetings and reviews as necessary.
  • Maintain company records and knowledge base.
  • Provide technical advice in resolving customer enquiries.
  • Support creation of engineering design guides, rules and tools to support business needs and continual business improvement.
  • Design overall product architecture, subassemblies and/or components to meet specification and cost targets. Also, analyse, document and verify design.
  • Use IT packages effectively in the course of engineering activities (Excel, Word, Smaths, CAD, Comsol etc.).
  • Provide checking (as a technical signatory delegate) for engineering deliverables.
  • Interpret and implement engineering specifications and standards to ensure compliance.
  • Preparation of engineering calculations over a number of disciplines in support of detail design schemes.
  • Perform concept and detail design work applying acoustic, dynamic, mechanical, and thermo-fluid principles to generate optimum customer solutions.
  • Participate in research and development activities.
  • Carry out and take responsibility for site survey activities.
  • Manage project timescales and achieve or improve deadlines.
  • Provide progress status reports to line management on a regular basis and work to achieve or improve company and customer objectives of program, cost and quality.
  • Provide an engineering resource for other departments.
  • Work in accordance with the company standard business processes.
  • Hazard identification and risk reduction.
  • Presentation of Technical information and procedures both internally and direct to customer.
  • Providing technical point of contact direct to the customer and sub-contract resource.

SUPERVISION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work on own initiative in a team environment.
  • Take on Role as lead Engineer on larger contracts and oversee team of Design Engineers assigned to said contract.
  • Responsible to the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer for all aspects of the mechanical design and integrity of the company’s range of products.
  • To lead by example on the mechanical discipline and operate to the highest engineering professional code of conduct.
  • To identify and implement improvement initiatives, including design and process, within the department and the business as a whole.
  • To liaise with other departments in achieving the departmental and business goals.
  • To liaise with External design resource and provide principal point of contact for technical queries.
  • To guide, mentor, supervise and develop junior staff on an ongoing basis.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Essential: Mechanical Engineering Degree.
  • Desirable: Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control. Good pass grades at Advanced level mathematics and physics. IMechE corporate membership. IOA membership.

EXPERIENCE

  • Essential: Experience in a responsible mechanical engineering position. Understanding of mechanical engineering principles. Good understanding of fabrication design details.
  • Desirable: Experience of working to structural design codes. Knowledge of acoustic and noise control principles. Design of fabrication details. Familiar with the requirements of the Construction Design and Management regulations. Practical use of design techniques of hazard identification and risk reduction. Familiar with the requirements of European directives such as the Machinery directive and ATEX.
