The School Heating Engineer/Plumber is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and installing plumbing systems and fixtures to ensure the school's facilities are safe, functional, and compliant with health and safety regulations. This role involves diagnosing and addressing plumbing issues, performing preventative maintenance, and supporting general facility upkeep.

This key role requires an organised and proactive approach and you will be able to work on your own initiative and demonstrate excellent time management whilst being able to work to tight deadlines and thrive under pressure.

Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor

Salary: £44,000 - £47,000 per annum.

Working hours: Your normal hours of work are 08:00 – 16:00, Monday – Friday, 30 minute unpaid break. You may be required to work such additional hours as the School considers necessary to fulfil the operational needs of the School.

Holiday entitlement: 28 days per annum, plus 7 days bank holidays. May Day is a working day.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Plumbing Maintenance and Repairs: Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair plumbing systems, including pipes, valves, faucets, toilets, sinks, and water heaters. Address leaks, clogs, and other plumbing issues promptly to minimise disruption to school operations. Replace or repair defective or worn-out components. Use of on site jetting machine to clear drain blockages.
  • Installation and Upgrades: Install new plumbing systems, fixtures, and appliances as needed. Upgrade outdated plumbing infrastructure to meet safety and efficiency standards.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Servicing of all gas and oil boilers across site. Conduct routine inspections to identify potential plumbing problems before they escalate. Perform maintenance tasks such as clearing drains, flushing systems, and testing water pressure.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure your qualifications to allow you to work with all oil and gas boilers remain up to date with current UK regulations. Ensure all plumbing work complies with plumbing codes and safety regulations. Maintain a safe work environment by following established safety protocols, school policies and using personal protective equipment (PPE). Ensure all work complies with health and safety legislation and building regulations. Maintain compliance documentation such as risk assessments, maintenance works and inspections.
  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly to plumbing emergencies, such as burst pipes or major leaks, to minimise damage and disruption. Assist in after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of work performed, including inspections, repairs, and installations and time spent on projects, materials used. Report issues requiring significant repairs or replacements to the Facilities Supervisor. Keep inventory of plumbing tools and request replacements or new equipment as required. Submit regular reports to the Facilities Supervisor.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the facilities team, school staff and contractors to determine electrical needs and priorities. Provide input on plumbing-related aspects of renovation or construction projects. Coordinate with external contractors as necessary. Reduce energy consumption as far as possible and look for ways to mitigate energy wastage.

Qualifications

  • Gas safe and LPG qualified desirable. Training can be provided for the right candidate.
  • OFTEC qualified.
  • Proven experience as a qualified plumber, preferably in a school or institutional setting.
  • Knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and best practices.
  • Familiarity with plumbing codes and regulations.
