Main purpose of role:
The Deputy Manager is responsible for supporting the Registered Manager in the effective day‑to‑day running of the residential children’s home. The role involves leading and managing staff, overseeing work allocations, ensuring compliance with regulatory and organisational requirements, and undertaking direct work with children and young people where required. The Deputy Manager is also responsible for aspects of the residential premises and deputising for the Registered Manager in their absence.
Key responsibilities:
- To provide strong leadership within the home, ensuring children and young people receive safe, high‑quality, child‑centered care that promotes their welfare, development, and positive outcomes.
- To oversee and support effective care planning, admissions, and transitions, ensuring placements are managed in line with individual care plans, organisational ethos, and regulatory requirements.
- To lead, support, and manage staff practice and performance, ensuring teams work professionally, competently, and in accordance with policies, procedures, and agreed standards.
- To ensure robust safeguarding practice, regulatory compliance, and continuous quality assurance across the home, maintaining safe environments and high standards of care in line with legislation and inspection frameworks.
Key tasks:
- In support of key responsibility 1 Leadership, Care, and Outcomes for Children and Young People: Support the Registered Manager to ensure the home operates in line with company policies, procedures, and all relevant Ofsted regulations. Act as Deputy Manager and assume responsibility for the home in the absence of the Registered Manager. Safeguard and promote the welfare, development, and wellbeing of children and young people. Ensure the individual needs of each young person are recognised and met, including cultural, religious, dietary, and medical needs. Promote equality and inclusion, challenging discrimination within the home and from external sources. Ensure the home provides a safe, nurturing, and responsive environment that meets both individual and group needs. Support children and young people during periods of stress or crisis, working towards positive outcomes. Ensure children and young people are supported to understand their rights and responsibilities and have their wishes and feelings heard. Support young people to develop responsibility for their actions in line with their age, understanding, and ability.
- In support of key responsibility 2 Care Planning, Admissions and Transitions: Support the Registered Manager and staff team to ensure admissions to the home are welcome and reflect the expectations of each child’s care plan. Ensure young people’s placements are delivered in line with the organisation’s ethos and individual care plans. Support planned and unplanned transitions from home, ensuring moves are handled sensitively and in line with policy and procedure. Oversee the development, implementation, monitoring, and review of individual care plans and case files. Support the Registered Manager to ensure care plans are regularly reviewed by key workers. Ensure Placement Plans are always followed and adhered to. Promote and support education, ensuring each child’s attendance and engagement in education is maintained.
- In support of key responsibility 3 Staff Management, Practice, and Performance: Ensure all staff act in a professional manner and work in line with organisational expectations. Ensure staff adhere to all policies, procedures, guidance, and risk assessments at all times. Compile and maintain staff rota’s to meet occupancy and staffing requirements, deputising for the Registered Manager where required. Ensure staff work in line with duty rota’s and participate in rolling rota’s to develop experience and skills. Conduct supervision with Senior Residential Support Workers and ensure supervision arrangements are in place across the team. Ensure staff under supervision complete induction, mandatory training, and development activities in line with their Personal Development Plans. Identify and elevate concerns regarding staff performance, conduct, or practice in line with policy.
- In support of key responsibility 4 Safeguarding, Compliance and Quality Assurance: Ensure all staff are familiar with and follow Local Authority Child Protection Procedures and the organisation’s Safer Caring and Child Protection Procedures. Report any safeguarding or child protection concerns immediately to the Registered Manager. Maintain a strong working knowledge of safeguarding responsibilities and promote safe practice across the team. Ensure incidents, accidents, and restraint records are completed accurately and shared with the Registered Manager within agreed timescales. Ensure confidentiality is maintained in line with data protection requirements. Support compliance with Health and Safety legislation, ensuring the premises and surrounding areas are safe and well maintained.
Operational and Organisational Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage shifts, ensuring children are kept safe, supported, and engaged throughout the day.
- Complete on‑call duties in line with the management rota.
- Undertake a minimum of 16 direct care hours per week, as agreed with the Registered Manager.
- Work flexibly, including varied hours, to meet the needs of the service.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with parents/carers, social workers, schools, and other professionals.
- Attend meetings, training, and supervision as required.
- Adhere to and promote the organisation’s Equalities, Inclusion, and Diversity Policy.
- Undertake any other duties that are reasonable and commensurate with the level of the role.
