Whipps Cross University Hospital, part of the Barts Health NHS Trust Group, is looking for a full-time Consultant Geriatrician to join our Older People's Services (OPS) team based at Whipps Cross Hospital site. The posts offer an exciting opportunity to join a growing team and to develop new models of working and services that support all older people attending the hospital and within the local community.

Whipps Cross Hospital serves a local population with a high degree of frailty and within the Barts Health Group is being developed to be a centre for Geriatric Medicine. In particular, this post will enable the post-holder to participate in reshaping local acute frailty services delivery and contribute to the departmental 5-year strategy plan.

Whipps Cross Acute Frailty Service is well-established and considered an example of outstanding practice by the CQC in their last inspection in 2019. Healthwatch Waltham Forest rated the inpatient Acute Frailty Unit as 'Outstanding' on their last visit in 2020. The post-holder will have the opportunity to work with a motivated multidisciplinary team to deliver outstanding care and meet the dynamic needs of an expanding older population in the borough.

This post also forms part of the redevelopment of Geriatric Medicine at Whipps Cross University Hospital and gives the post-holder a unique opportunity to collaborate in their development of the hospital itself. You must hold full registration with the General Medical Council and be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCST.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

  • Essential: MRCP or Equivalent Specialist qualification, Full GMC Registration with license to practice, Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility for entry within 6 months of date of Advisory Appointments Committee) for either Geriatric Medicine or G(I)Medicine by CCT or CESR.
  • Desirable: Evidence of participation in research (peer-reviewed publications etc.), Appropriate higher degree (e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent).

Experience:

  • Essential: Higher specialist training in Geriatrics and G(I)Medicine, Broad experience in Geriatrics and G(I)M.
  • Desirable: Ability to organize and deliver a teaching programme, Experience in service development, Current ALS certificate.

Knowledge:

  • Essential: Detailed knowledge of Geriatrics and G(I)M and of the specialist skills required for this post, Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients, Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to life-long learning.

Skills:

  • Essential: Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, Experience of supervising medical staff, Ability to teach medical students and junior medical and nursing staff, Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.

Other:

  • Essential: Flexible and co-operative approach to colleagues, Good leadership skills, Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national level, Prepared to live within 10 miles or 30 minutes of the hospital, Self-motivated with an enquiring, critical approach to work.
