Role Description This is a full-time, on-site role for a Criminal Defence Solicitor (newly qualified to 5 years’ PQE) based in the Greater Edinburgh Area and Galashiels. Salary £35k-£50k depending on experience. Private health care offered. Start date November 2026

The solicitor will represent clients in criminal proceedings across Scottish courts, including advising at police stations, preparing and presenting cases in summary and solemn courts, and managing files from initial instruction through conclusion. Day-to-day responsibilities include taking client instructions, assessing evidence, drafting legal documents, liaising with counsel and experts, and negotiating with prosecutors where appropriate. The role involves regular court appearances, thorough legal research on criminal law and procedure, and maintaining accurate case records in line with regulatory standards. The solicitor will also contribute to team discussions, support colleagues in complex matters, and help uphold the firm’s high standards of client service and professional ethics.

Qualifications

  • Qualified Solicitor in Scotland (NQ–5 years’ post-qualification experience) with a practicing certificate in good standing.
  • Knowledge of Scottish criminal law, criminal procedure, and rules of evidence, with experience appearing in court or a strong desire to develop advocacy skills.
  • Proven ability to manage a caseload, including taking instructions, drafting pleadings and legal documents, and preparing cases for trial or other hearings.
  • Excellent client-care skills, including clear communication with clients from diverse backgrounds and the ability to handle sensitive and stressful situations with professionalism.
  • Effective research, analytical, and written skills to interpret legislation, case law, and guidance, and to produce concise, accurate advice and submissions.
  • Strong organisational and time-management abilities, with attention to detail and the capability to work to deadlines in a busy litigation environment.
  • Team-oriented approach, including collaboration with colleagues, counsel, experts, and support staff, while working independently when required.
  • Willingness to travel to courts across Scotland
