Welds metal parts with welding equipment as specified by layout, welding diagram, or work order by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Understands OSHA, AISC & AWS Standards relating to welding and that working safely is a job requirement. Understands and complies with CSE, Inc. Safety Program, rules, regulations and updates; works within AISC Standard Practice codes relating to welding.
  • Follows directions and assumes responsibility of assisting Foreman on site by completing the following tasks:
  • Assists with inspecting and identifying hazards associated with all welding.
  • Positions parts in jigs or fixtures on bench floor, or clamps parts together along with layout.
  • Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding.
  • Selects torch, torch tip, filler rod and flux, according to welding chart specifications or type and thickness of material.
  • Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse; connects regulator valves and hoses to oxygen and fuel gas cylinders, and welding equipment.
  • Strikes (forms) arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work.
  • Turns regulator valves to activate flow of gases, lights torch and adjusts gas mixture and pressure to obtain desired results.
  • Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from colour of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten pool.
  • Holds torch at proper angle and guides along weld joint, applying filler rod to molten area to form a strong joint.
  • Fits materials together prior to welding.
  • Has thorough knowledge in fabrication including lay-out, cutting, grinding.
  • Has the ability to weld FCAW, SMAW, and other processes.
  • Assumes responsibility of inspecting equipment, structures and/or material.
  • Examines weld for bead size and other quality indicators.
  • Repairs broken or cracked metal objects, fills holes, and builds up metal as needed.
  • Prepares parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces; welds along vertical flat, horizontal or overhead welds.
  • Scarfs or grooves weld prior to applying filler metal; chips or grinds off excess weld, slag, or spatter.
  • Cleans or degreases weld joint or work piece; tacks assemblies.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

    • Education and/or Experience: 2+ years of experience.
    • Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
    • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, and distance.
    • Reasoning Ability: Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
    • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Welding Certification, Valid Driver's License.
    • Other Qualifications: Must be able to travel. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
