We are seeking a senior Economist to lead our analysis of the Chinese economy and drive insights that shape global commodity markets. In this pivotal role, you will work closely with our Beijing and Shanghai offices to incorporate on-the-ground intelligence, produce rigorous economic forecasts, and communicate complex economic developments to clients and colleagues. You will also contribute to CRU's understanding of how decarbonisation and climate change are reshaping the global economy and commodity sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead analysis of the Chinese economy, working closely with CRU offices in Beijing and Shanghai to shape forecast judgements and monitor economic developments.
  • Produce monthly forecasts for GDP, industrial production, inflation, interest rates, and other relevant variables using the Oxford Economics Global Macro Model and independent analysis.
  • Cover additional Asian economies with flexibility based on experience and interests.
  • Communicate economic insights directly to clients, prospects, and colleagues across CRU.
  • Identify and present key implications of economic developments for metals markets, maximising value for clients.
  • Develop expertise in commodity markets through collaboration with colleagues and client engagement.
  • Support the broader economics team with data collection, chart preparation, presentations, and analytical tools development.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Economics.

Skills & Experience

  • Strong quantitative background in economics with previous experience in economic analysis or forecasting.
  • Deep knowledge of the Chinese economy.
  • Fluent Mandarin speaker with excellent written and spoken English.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g., R, Stata, or E-views).
  • Knowledge of sustainability and the energy transition (advantageous).
  • Ability to think creatively and present information in visually compelling ways.
  • Goal-oriented with high energy and enthusiasm.
  • Confident engaging with diverse clients and internal/external stakeholders.
