Croydon University Hospital NHS Trust wishes to appoint a full-time fixed-term (12 months) Locum Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery with a specialist interest in knee surgery, commencing 1 May 2026. This post has been created to meet increased service demand in knee surgery during a period of planned sabbatical leave of a well-known regionally and nationally substantive knee consultant and to ensure continuity of elective and trauma services. This is a time-limited post of 12 months and is not intended as a substantive appointment.
The successful applicant will provide expertise in:
- Primary total knee replacement
- Unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement
- Soft tissue knee surgery, including patellofemoral joint pathology
The post holder will integrate within the existing consultant body to deliver high-quality elective knee surgery and contribute to the general trauma service, including upper and lower limb trauma. To support and further develop the management of patients accessing the service, the post holder will work with a team of trauma surgeons as part of a 7-day trauma service. This requires knowledge, experience and expertise in undertaking general trauma, periarticular and complex lower limb fracture including periprosthetic fracture around knee replacement.
The post holder will be expected to provide a week of emergency commitment 1 in 12. The post holder will join a team of 14 Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeons and will participate in the 1 in 12 on-call duties at CUH. The post holder is also required to support senior grade staff grade and associate specialist staff in their development.
Croydon Health Services NHS Trust is committed to supporting flexible working arrangements. Applicants are encouraged to discuss any flexibility they may need during the recruitment process. The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of general Orthopaedic patients admitted under their care and on call on a 1 in 12 rota based at the Croydon site. The orthopaedic on-call rota will run as Consultant of the Week (emergency committed only) from Friday 8am until Friday 8am the following week in line with the London Emergency Standards 1 in 12. There is a 1 in 12 weekend commitment.
The post holder will share junior staff and will be responsible for the training of CT1 and STs as well as Trust Grade Doctors. The post holder will work closely with an excellent physiotherapist and consultant physiotherapy team within the department covering various aspects of service from triage to see-and-treat model. It is expected that the appointee will undertake a minimum of 8.5 programmed activities for direct clinical care and 1.5 for supporting duties. Normally these are carried out on site, though this may be negotiable in respect of the supporting activities. The job plan is annualised and run over a twelve-week timetable.
