Croydon University Hospital NHS Trust wishes to appoint a full‑time fixed‑term (12 month) Locum Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery with a specialist interest in knee surgery, commencing 1 May 2026. This time‑limited appointment has been created to meet increased demand for knee surgery during a sabbatical leave of a well‑known regional and national knee consultant, and to ensure continuity of elective and trauma services.
The successful applicant will provide expertise in the following areas:
- Primary total knee replacement
- Unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement
- Soft‑tissue knee surgery, including patellofemoral joint pathology
The post holder will integrate within the existing consultant body to deliver high‑quality elective knee surgery and contribute to the general trauma service, including upper and lower limb trauma.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing day‑to‑day general orthopaedic patients admitted under their care and on call on a 1 in 12 rota based at the Croydon site.
- Participating in a 1 in 12 on‑call rota and a 1 in 12 weekend commitment, acting as Consultant of the Week (emergency‑only) from Friday 8 am until Friday 8 am the following week.
- Providing a daily ward round when on call.
- Providing a week of emergency commitment (1 in 12).
- Supporting senior grade staff, associate specialists, and training junior staff (CT1/STs and Trust Grade Doctors).
- Working closely with physiotherapy and allied health professionals for triage and a see‑and‑treat model.
- Completing a minimum of 8.5 programme activities for direct clinical care and 1.5 for supporting duties, typically on site but negotiable.
The post is part of a strategy to develop excellence in orthopaedic care and will involve working 12 weeks of a semi‑annual timetable. The final timetable will be agreed with the Clinical Lead and Service Manager following appointment, and may be altered with full support of the specialty division and Medical Director's agreement. Applicants are encouraged to discuss flexible working arrangements during the recruitment process.
