Croydon Council is seeking an organised, motivated, and detail‑driven Collections Move Assistant to support a major project within our Croydon Archives service. This role will run in parallel with the ongoing refurbishment of our new on‑site archive stores at Croydon Clocktower. You will play a key part in preparing collections for relocation so that, once the new stores are ready, records can be transferred efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • You will lead the day‑to‑day activities of the collections move, managing your own workload to meet project milestones.
  • You will appraise and classify material, enhance accession and catalogue information to meet standards such as ISAD(G), and assess and resolve conservation and repackaging needs.
  • You will prepare collections for relocation, maintain accurate locations information as material is transferred, and conduct environmental monitoring of the refurbished storage areas.
  • The role includes liaising with donors to clarify terms of deposit, contributing to project reporting, and sharing learning with colleagues and the wider sector.

Qualifications / Skills

  • Proven experience working with archives, particularly in cataloguing, handling, repackaging, and collection moves, with museum experience also welcomed.
  • Confidence using collections management systems (ideally AtoM), knowledgeable about archival standards and legislation.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines.
  • Strong organisational and problem‑solving skills, and a positive, flexible approach.

This role offers hands‑on experience at the heart of a significant collections relocation project - ideal for someone undertaking or having recently completed an Archives & Records Management qualification, or with equivalent experience.
