We are looking for a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice who will work within the engineering manufacturing team at our research and development site in Wantage, Oxfordshire.
Training provided:
- There will be a knowledge, skills and behavioural framework which you will be assessed against throughout your apprenticeship.
- The first year of your apprenticeship will involve comprehensive training at a local college.
- Subsequent years will be primarily spent in company, where you will gradually start conducting some work on your own, and taking responsibility for your own part in various projects.
- You will work closely with the other engineers who will give you all the instruction you need to do your work.
- Practical hands-on training will be provided following a company-training plan, against which an NVQ level 3 qualification is awarded.
- You will be required to sit an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of your apprenticeship and will have support from a local college who will oversee and guide you throughout.
- After completing your apprenticeship there may be opportunity for further education for the right candidate.
Skills and competencies to achieve throughout Apprenticeship:
- Working safely on a range of manual and CNC machines within the manufacturing services machine shop, producing components using the full scope of the multi-disciplined machines.
- Undertaking a range of precision grinding techniques, mounting, as well as dressing grinding wheels to achieve a range of finishes to a range of different materials.
- Fine-tuning mechanical skills such as to produce parts for projects supporting engineers.
- Producing basic to complex components using the full range and application of machines.
- An understanding of the fundamentals of engineering standards, traceability, calibration drawing symbols and geometrical tolerances used within engineering (GD&T).
- Producing basic engineering drawings for use by manufacturing services using the CAD stations within the department.
- Producing work using a range of methods of production e.g. machining, fitting, electrical, electronic etc.
- Producing simple designs as required to suit modifications to existing equipment/machines working from the basic principles of the desired improvement required for the project.
- Managing, with assistance, smaller scale projects within the group including equipment, process and area improvements, innovation and idea generation for the company and some more ‘blue-sky thinking’ opportunities.
Essential skills, education and knowledge:
- A minimum of five GCSEs (or equivalent qualifications) at Grade 4/5 and above including English, Maths and Science.
- Excellent team working skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Motivated and interested in a career in mechanical engineering.
- Inquisitive and enthusiastic.
- Compliance with health and safety guidance and procedures.
