We have a vacancy for a Capital Allowance Assistance Manager to work in our Corporate Tax team. This is a full-time permanent role with opportunities for progression. The clients will predominantly be for corporates, LLP and individuals.
You will work closely with the tax partners and capital allowance team delivering capital allowance and land remediation relief analysis within a portfolio of existing and new clients, ranging from owner-managed companies to quoted groups. You will also be involved in business development initiatives and working with the team to generate new work.
Overview
The Capital Allowances Assistant Manager plays a key role in identifying, analysing, and maximising tax relief opportunities on commercial property expenditure. The role blends surveying expertise with tax‑technical understanding, supporting clients and internal teams to ensure accurate and optimised capital allowances claims.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with management of a portfolio of capital-allowance projects across multiple sectors.
- Conduct detailed site surveys of commercial properties to identify qualifying plant and machinery, integral features, and structures & buildings allowances.
- Analyse construction costs, refurbishment expenditure, and acquisition data to allocate costs in line with HMRC guidance.
- Prepare, review, and submit capital-allowance claims, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Advise clients on fixed-asset tax treatment, expenditure planning, and wider incentives.
- Engage with tax authorities and manage enquiry responses where required.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of capital allowances legislation, case law, and HMRC practice.
- Support tax teams with enquiries, HMRC challenges, and technical discussions.
- Provide clear explanations of capital allowances principles to non‑specialist stakeholders.
- Contribute to business development by identifying opportunities within client portfolios.
- Ensure all work complies with internal quality standards, company and professional guidelines.
- Assist to develop junior colleagues through coaching, oversight, and quality assurance.
- Support business development activity, including proposal input and opportunity spotting.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Background in surveying, quantity surveying, building surveying, or cost consultancy or experience within a capital allowance team working on property related analysis.
- Strong understanding of construction technology and cost breakdowns and ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Strong written communication skills for producing technical reports.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical skills and proficient with Excel and cost‑analysis tools.
Desirable
- Experience in capital allowances, tax depreciation, or property tax incentives.
- Knowledge of HMRC capital allowances legislation and relevant case law.
- Experience working with accountants, tax advisors, or property investors.
- Membership or progress toward RICS or similar professional qualification.
Qualifications
- Degree in Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying, Construction Management, or related discipline.
- Relevant Degree with relevant professional qualification and capital allowance experience.
- Professional accreditation (RICS, ATT, CTA) beneficial but not essential.
