This role is offered by Crouch Waterfall, a subsidiary of Vulcain Engineering Group. As part of the Vulcain family, Crouch Waterfall brings decades of specialist experience in Civil, Structural, and Geotechnical Engineering to a wide range of UK infrastructure projects. Crouch Waterfall specialises in core areas of Bridges, Rail, Infrastructure, Buildings and Geotechnical Services, designing and co‑ordinating projects from conception to completion. Established since 1981, the business has experienced steady growth driven by a committed and highly skilled workforce of 120 employees.
The Position: Crouch Waterfall is continuing to grow and, as part of our expanding Rail team, we’re looking for a Graduate Bridge Engineer or Bridge Engineer to join our Basingstoke office. This role is ideal for someone at an early stage in their career who is keen to build a future in bridge and structural engineering, with strong technical support, real project exposure, and clear development opportunities.
Some of the main responsibilities will include:
- Working within a multi‑disciplinary design team on a varied portfolio of UK projects including rail and road bridges, footbridges, stations, level crossings, buildings, and wider infrastructure.
- Supporting the design of new bridges and the assessment, repair, and strengthening of existing structures.
- Assisting with project delivery from feasibility through to construction support, helping meet programme and budget requirements.
- Attending site surveys and client meetings, developing confidence in a client‑facing role.
- Building project management skills, including exposure to bidding, tendering, and delivery processes.
- Gaining insight into the commercial and financial aspects of project delivery.
- Supporting technical activities such as structural inspections, surveys, feasibility studies, and programme preparation.
- Reviewing designs and calculations produced by others under supervision.
You’ll be supported by experienced senior engineers within a fast‑growing Rail team, with clear pathways for development, including support towards Chartered Engineer status and opportunities to broaden your skills beyond pure design.
Preferred Profile:
- A BEng (or higher) in Civil and/or Structural Engineering, or another relevant discipline.
- A graduate member of ICE or IStructE, or willing to work towards professional membership.
- A strong grounding in structural design principles.
- Open to graduates and early‑career engineers, with 1‑2 years relevant practical experience gained through work, placements or projects being desirable.
- Exposure or understanding of bridge engineering or structural design would be an advantage.
- Any exposure to UK rail projects would be desirable but is not essential.
- Fluent in English with the permanent right to work in the UK.
- Based within a reasonable commuting distance of Basingstoke, or willing to relocate.
