Are you a skilled phlebotomist who enjoys making a real difference in people's lives? In this unique domiciliary role, you'll bring essential healthcare services directly to patients in the comfort of their own homes or care home setting. Working closely under the guidance of the Nurse Manager, you'll perform venepuncture for a variety of patients while providing friendly, compassionate care. Main duties of the job

  • Perform venepuncture safely and efficiently in patients' homes or care home setting, following all clinical protocols and infection control standards.
  • Ensure accurate labeling, handling, and transport of blood samples.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and provide compassionate care during home visits.
  • Support the nursing team with other relevant clinical duties as required.
  • Document all procedures accurately and promptly in accordance with local policies.
  • Report any adverse events or concerns to the Nurse Manager immediately.

Crossley Street Surgery is a progressive, four-partner GP practice serving a semi-rural population of around 12,000 patients from modern, purpose-built premises in Wetherby. We are a teaching and training practice, hosting GP registrars and FY2 doctors throughout the year. Our well-established multi-disciplinary team includes:

  • Salaried GPs and GP registrars
  • Clinical pharmacists and pharmacy technicians (PCN team)
  • An in-house pharmacy
  • A dedicated paramedic team supporting home visits
  • A dedicated Management Team
  • A dedicated Data Quality and Patient Services team

We operate using SystmOne and AccuRx Total Triage, with 15-minute appointments to support safe, high-quality clinical care. The practice is part of the Wetherby Primary Care Network and actively engages in new models of care.

Job responsibilities

Working under the direct supervision of the nurse manager and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols and within the scope of their practice, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population. In addition, the phlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team. This is a domiciliary role. The following are the core responsibilities of the phlebotomist:

  • Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample(s)
  • Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols
  • Performing venepuncture in patients' homes and care home settings
  • Maintaining accurate patient records
  • The correct labelling, packaging, and storing of samples
  • Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies
  • Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
  • Maintaining an effective liaison with the laboratory staff
  • Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient-related matters
  • Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead
  • Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
  • Support and participate in shared learning within the practice
  • Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota
  • Ordering stock and re-stocking of clinical rooms
  • Performing routine urine tests in accordance with practice protocol requested by the GPs

Person Specification

  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
  • Experience of working with the general public
  • Experience of establishing effective office administrative systems
