Are you a seasoned Life & Health underwriting professional ready to make a real impact? Do you thrive at the intersection of technical excellence, client strategy, and portfolio innovation? If so, this could be the role you've been waiting for. At Swiss Re, we're looking for a Senior Underwriting Consultant to join our dynamic team in London — someone who brings deep expertise, sharp commercial thinking, and a genuine passion for shaping the future of L&H insurance.
About the Role
As a Senior Underwriting Consultant, you will play a pivotal role in driving high-quality technical underwriting assessments while contributing to the strategic direction of our Life & Health portfolio. You will be a trusted advisor to our clients, translating complex risk insights into clear, commercially impactful solutions. This is a role for someone who is equally comfortable diving deep into technical analysis and engaging confidently at senior levels of client organisations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and deliver high-quality technical underwriting assessments across a diverse Life & Health portfolio, ensuring rigorous risk selection and sound decision-making.
- Drive portfolio outcomes by monitoring performance, identifying trends, and proactively managing risks and opportunities within the book of business.
- Translate technical underwriting insights into clearly articulated, commercially compelling proposals that highlight benefits and impacts for clients.
- Engage strategically with clients at all levels, providing expert guidance on both operational and strategic underwriting matters.
- Leverage market intelligence, portfolio data, and emerging technology trends to develop innovative services and solutions aligned with clients' strategic goals.
- Lead and contribute to projects and initiatives, taking accountability for driving tasks through to completion while fostering collaboration across the team.
- Anticipate and mitigate potential risks and opportunities, drawing on a strong awareness of market and portfolio dynamics.
- Support the development of a future-fit service proposition, contributing to the evolution of underwriting practices and client offerings.
- Collaborate with and mentor colleagues, sharing expertise and contributing to a high-performing, inclusive team culture.
About the Team
The Life & Health Claims and Underwriting Team is a forward-thinking group that leverages deep experience to maintain a dual focus on strong portfolio outcomes and a future-fit service proposition. The team is dedicated to managing the L&H portfolio and delivering high-quality technical assessments, while harnessing portfolio insights, technology, and market trends to design services and solutions that align with clients' strategic goals. We are a collaborative, innovative team committed to making a meaningful difference for our clients and the people they serve.
About You
You are a highly motivated and passionate Life & Health underwriting professional who thrives on the challenge of risk selection and client partnership. You bring a strong sense of accountability — you take ownership of projects and drive them to completion — while remaining a collaborative and supportive team player. You are commercially astute, intellectually curious, and energised by the opportunity to shape both the operational and strategic dimensions of client relationships. You communicate with clarity and confidence, making complex technical concepts accessible and compelling to a wide range of audiences.
We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:
- Extensive L&H underwriting expertise in Life & Health insurance underwriting, demonstrating a strong track record of sound risk selection and portfolio management.
- Deep technical underwriting knowledge across a broad range of Life & Health products, with the ability to deliver rigorous, high-quality assessments independently.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical topics clearly and practically to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
These are additional nice to haves:
- Experience engaging at senior levels, with strong relationship management and influencing skills.
- Awareness of and interest in emerging technologies, digital tools, and market trends shaping the future of L&H underwriting and insurance services.
- Proven experience leading or contributing to strategic projects or initiatives within an underwriting environment.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret portfolio data and translate insights into actionable strategies.
