As a First Contact Physiotherapist, you will be fully integrated into the practice, collaborating closely with GPs, receptionists, nurses, and other MDT colleagues to provide cohesive, tailored patient care.

Main duties of the job

  • You will work within the general practice team to meet the needs of patients and support the delivery of the services.
  • You will be expected to demonstrate clinical and communication skills to a high standard and a commitment to ongoing personal and professional development.
  • You will evaluate, diagnose, and manage MSK patients right from the initial point of contact, enjoying complete autonomy along with clinical support.

Job responsibilities

  • Independently evaluate, diagnose, and manage musculoskeletal (MSK) presentations, including intricate cases.
  • Request necessary investigations (such as imaging and blood tests) and make suitable referrals.
  • Create self-management plans to encourage behavioural change and facilitate recovery.
  • Utilise the full extent of practice, including prescribing and injection therapy.
  • Engage within a GP-based multidisciplinary team (MDT), nurturing strong relationships with practice staff.
  • Educate colleagues on MSK triage pathways and offer guidance.
  • Support clinical audits and initiatives for service improvement.
  • Take part in supervision and peer reflection sessions.
  • Continue professional development in line with the HEE Roadmap to Practice.
  • Contribute to clinical governance and mentoring where appropriate.

Person Specification

  • Minimum 5 years post-graduate clinical experience.
  • Minimum 3 years MSK clinical experience.
  • Familiarity with the HEE Roadmap to Practice and the MSK Core Capabilities Framework.
  • An active Continuing Professional Development (CPD) portfolio that aligns with the 4 pillars of advanced practice.
  • Experience working in GP practices.
  • Experience using EMIS.
  • HCPC and CSP registered Physiotherapist.
  • Qualified injection therapist and/or independent prescriber.
  • Completion of some level 7 MSc learning.
