The Discovery is looking for a confident, sales-driven Deputy General Manager to join our growing team. Located in the beautiful Cyncoed/Lakeside area of Cardiff, The Discovery is a historic and much-loved community pub. We pride ourselves on being a destination venue for locals and visitors alike — showing all major live sport on our big screens, hosting live music and events, and serving some of the best Sunday lunches in the area. The Role

As Deputy General Manager, you’ll be a key part of the leadership team and play a vital role in the day-to-day running of the pub. You’ll support the General Manager in delivering exceptional service, driving sales, and maintaining the high standards that our guests expect. This role includes the opportunity for live-in accommodation, making it ideal for someone relocating to Cardiff or looking for a convenient living arrangement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the General Manager in the daily operation of the business
  • Confidently running the venue in the GM’s absence
  • Leading, motivating and developing the team across all departments
  • Managing cash handling and financial procedures
  • Creating the right atmosphere and “scene setting” within the venue
  • Driving sales through excellent service and smart operational decisions
  • Planning rotas while maintaining control of wage percentages
  • Managing stock control and maintaining strong GP performance
  • Training and developing new and existing team members
  • Supporting menu development and offering creative input
  • Maintaining strong team morale and creating a positive working environment
  • Coaching supervisors and helping them grow in their roles

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience across multiple hospitality roles (bar, floor, and management)
  • Previous leadership or deputy management experience
  • Strong organisational and people-management skills
  • A passion for driving sales and delivering outstanding guest experiences
  • Ability to stay calm and lead confidently under pressure
  • Cocktail knowledge and training experience is highly desirable
  • A proactive attitude and genuine enthusiasm for hospitality

Essential Information

  • Job Type: Permanent, Full Time
  • Salary: From £28,000 per year
  • Location: Cyncoed, Cardiff
  • Schedule Includes: Evenings and night shifts, Every weekend, Weekend availability required

Applicants must be able to reliably commute to Cyncoed or relocate prior to starting (live-in accommodation available).
