Material Index is hiring a material surveyor (auditor) to join its team in London. The role is an opportunity to shape the future of sustainable construction by uncovering the hidden potential of buildings. As part of the material audit team, you’ll be working at the frontline of the circular economy, surveying sites across London and the UK, cataloguing materials, and feeding insights back into design and digital product teams to help them achieve ambitious reuse targets.

This is not your typical surveying role: you’ll combine technical expertise with design sensibility, sustainability know-how, and clear communication to influence real project outcomes.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead site-based surveys across the UK, using our proprietary Material Index platform
  • Review and interpret technical drawings and documentation
  • Conduct materials research and assess reuse potential
  • Collect, structure, and analyse data at building and component scale
  • Prepare clear and engaging audit reports for planning, BREEAM and design teams
  • Present findings and insights to design and project teams
  • Contribute towards digital product development

Desirable skills:

  • A diverse software skill set including Revit, BIM
  • Knowledge of UK based construction methodology and organisation, historical and current
  • Good verbal presentation skills, data visualisation and graphic design

Growth opportunities:

We see this role as an excellent fit for a recent building engineering/architecture graduate (Part 1 or Part 2) with a strong interest in sustainability, or an experienced building surveyor looking to apply their skills to the circular economy. At Material Index, progression is fast for the right person. With hands-on exposure to projects from day one, you’ll have the opportunity to grow quickly into a project lead role – taking on more responsibility in client engagement, project delivery, and team management.

About Material Index:

We’re a multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers and software developers working side by side in a fast-paced, collaborative environment in Clerkenwell, London. Our work combines on-site material audits, digital tools, and materials brokering, helping clients cut carbon and costs while making reuse mainstream.
