The Francis Crick Institute is Europe’s largest biomedical research institute under one roof. Our world-class scientists and staff collaborate on vital research to help prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, infectious diseases and neurodegenerative conditions. The Crick is a place for collaboration, innovation and exploration across many disciplines. A space where the brightest minds can pursue big and bold ideas and discover answers to crucial scientific questions. We support them in a dynamic environment which fosters excellence with state-of-the-art infrastructure, cutting-edge facilities, and a creative and curious culture. We’ve removed traditional boundaries of departments, divisions and disciplines and instead have an open approach that supports every researcher. This gives us the freedom to take risks and carry out high-quality, pioneering research. Creating a space for discovery without boundaries helps us to turn our science into benefits for human health and the economy.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious Postdoctoral Project Research Scientist to join the Rouhani Lab. The lab is dedicated to understanding the factors underlying an organ’s regenerative capacity in order to design novel therapeutics to augment biological function. Our long-term vision is to be able to apply our findings to stimulate regeneration in other non-proliferative tissues, understand the process of organ ageing and to elucidate the molecular steps to cancer.

As a PPRS, you will drive a project in collaboration with AstraZeneca to develop next generation in vitro and ex vivo models of liver biology. The role involves working with bioengineers at the Francis Crick Institute to develop a novel microfluidic perfusion-based system to keep patient derived liver tissue viable and functional in the lab for prolonged periods and under physiological conditions. You will be expected to work independently on this project, under the supervision of the Group Leader - Foad Rouhani, and will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other lab members and scientists across the Crick.

You will be responsible for:

  • Adapting existing technologies and building next generation microfluidic device prototypes under the guidance of the Making Labs
  • Testing the viability and function of liver tissues
  • Applying gene editing to modulate cellular function
  • Acquiring, analysing and reviewing scientific data
  • Working independently to drive the project to completion in a timely manner

You will have:

  • PhD awarded or in the final stages of PhD submission in related fields
  • Strong track record of writing papers, as evidenced by publications in high impact journals
  • Expertise in bioinformatics, human genomics, or analysis of high-throughput data
  • Deep knowledge and experience within core laboratory skills, such as molecular biology
  • Ability to clearly document work and communicate results effectively
  • Ability to work independently and meet key deadlines
