The Opportunity: If you enjoy getting into complex network problems but also want to be the person designing and delivering the solution, this is worth a look. We’re working with an established MSP/MSSP that’s looking for an experienced engineer to strengthen its networking capability. It’s a mixture of 3rd line network support and project delivery, so you won’t just be sitting on a ticket queue all day. You’ll pick up the more complex networking escalations while also getting involved in firewall replacements, network refreshes, connectivity changes, wireless deployments, office moves and SD-WAN projects. The important thing is that you can take ownership. When something gets complicated, you’re comfortable getting into the network, working out what’s actually going wrong and seeing it through to resolution.

Day to day: You’ll work across LAN/WAN, routing, switching, VLANs, VPNs, firewalls, wireless, connectivity and SD-WAN within a multi-customer MSP environment. One day you might be troubleshooting a firewall or routing issue, the next you could be implementing a new network, replacing a firewall or planning a customer connectivity migration. The environment is multi-vendor, with technologies including Fortinet, Cisco, Meraki, SonicWall, Aruba, Ubiquiti, DrayTek and Ruckus. You don’t need experience with all of them – strong networking fundamentals are much more important. You’ll also work with ISPs and connectivity providers around leased lines, broadband, failover and wider connectivity issues. There’s a proper project element too. You’ll help plan network changes, understand the existing environment, document what needs changing and produce implementation, rollback and handover documentation.

Who we are looking for: You could currently be a 3rd Line Network Engineer, Network & Infrastructure Engineer, or Network Support Engineer within an MSP or service provider. You’ll need strong networking fundamentals and be comfortable troubleshooting across firewalls, switches, routing, VLANs, VPNs, wireless, DNS/DHCP and internet connectivity. We’re particularly interested in people who have gone beyond simply supporting networks and have started delivering changes and projects themselves. That could be firewall migrations, network refreshes, office moves, new site deployments, wireless upgrades, SD-WAN or connectivity migrations. You’ll also need to be comfortable dealing directly with customers, explaining technical issues clearly and taking ownership when something needs sorting properly. Recent MSP, service provider or multi-customer experience is important, and you’ll need a full UK driving licence for customer-site work.

The Next Steps: If you want more ownership of customer networks and the opportunity to combine complex troubleshooting with proper project delivery, this could be a good next move. You’ll still get the variety of an MSP environment, but with much more focus on networking, firewalls, connectivity and project delivery. If this sounds like the sort of move you’ve been looking for, drop me a message or contact Joe White at CRG TEC for a confidential chat about the role.
