Open to: Estimators working for a residential developer, housing association, main contractor or consultancy

Region: South West region covering Gloucestershire, Bristol and North Somerset

Estimator – Job purpose:

To lead the production and maintenance of robust cost plans and estimates, supporting the team in securing land opportunities and evaluating controlled land. The Estimator ensures financial accuracy and efficiency, helping to drive commercial success and strategic decision-making.

Estimator – About you:

  • Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or Construction Management or demonstrable practical experience.
  • Relevant estimating experience working at a similar level within a commercial house builder or construction environment - working for a residential developer, housing association, main contractor or consultancy.
  • Experience in taking off groundworks, earthworks, roadworks, paving, and drainage quantities.
  • Experience in procurement, contract pricing, and cost planning.
  • Knowledge of new build residential development and building techniques.
  • Strong understanding of new build residential development and construction techniques.
  • IT literate with experience in cost estimating and take-off software.
  • Excellent analytical skills, ensuring cost accuracy and risk mitigation.
  • An eye for detail and the ability to assess project-wide financial implications.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to translate complex financial data into actionable insights.
  • Planning, organising and prioritising skills with the ability to multi-task.
  • Strong relationship management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Estimator – About the role:

  • As a member of the pre-construction team, deliver the estimating function in line with agreed standards, ensuring quality and efficient delivery.
  • Evaluate financial risks and constraints attached to land development, such as access, levels, drainage, and services.
  • Carry out take-offs for roads, sewers, earthworks cut-and-fill assessments, and plot externals.
  • Generate and update plot schedules across mixed tenure developments.
  • Ensure cost plans for existing schemes are updated with current rates and revised information as they progress through the gateway process.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the Land, Pre-Construction, Commercial, and Technical Teams to ensure accurate cost plans are produced to hit required gateways.
  • Prepare detailed cost plans to present to the land and technical teams ahead of land bid submission.
  • Maintain a cost database of priced schemes to inform the land team of average costs for high-level land bids.
  • Collaborate with the wider commercial team to gather quotes from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Source subcontractors who can provide works and services to the required quality, timeline, and budget.
  • Review contract documents, specifications, and drawings to compile robust tender packages for subcontractors.
  • Manage scheme financial performance as part of a wider programme, ensuring commercial viability.
  • Search for ways to improve estimating processes and service delivery by sharing best practices with colleagues.
  • Adhere to and follow all employee policies and procedures to deliver the best outcomes for the business and colleagues.
  • Maintain industry knowledge and show awareness of relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks.
  • Adopt a culture of continuous improvement, proactively identifying areas for efficiency and cost control.
