There’s a certain type of person this role suits. Someone who doesn’t just read drawings, they understand them. Someone who sees a sheet of steel not as material, but as a sequence, a process, a finished product waiting to be programmed correctly. This isn’t a role where you sit back and press go. It’s a role where you’re right at the centre of production, connecting drawings to machines, timelines to delivery, and detail to output.

Crem Recruitment is working on behalf of a well-established steel manufacturing business, one that continues to grow its programming team as demand increases. This is an additional hire, not a replacement, which says everything about where the business is heading.

The role

You’ll be responsible for turning technical drawings into accurate, efficient CNC programmes, ensuring production runs smoothly and deadlines are met. It’s hands-on, detail-driven and collaborative.

  • Creating and modifying CNC programmes using designated software
  • Interpreting engineering drawings and manually programming from customer designs
  • Using 2D CAD to check geometry, dimensions and NC files
  • Scheduling CNC machines and monitoring progress throughout the day
  • Quoting sections, fittings and lead times
  • Liaising closely with sales to align cutting times with delivery expectations
  • Working with production, purchasing and wider teams to keep everything moving
  • Managing traceability, batch numbers and documentation
  • Ensuring machine accuracy through drawing checks and production feedback

This is not siloed work. You’re part of the flow, from enquiry through to finished product.

The environment

You’ll be joining a close-knit programming team within a structured production setup, working alongside experienced programmers, management and support staff. The machinery is modern and specialist, including Bystronic laser and Voortman plasma systems, giving you exposure to high-quality equipment and varied work. There’s no rigid hierarchy here, but there is stability. Progression exists over time, but this role is really about becoming excellent at what you do, not chasing titles.

What they’re looking for

  • Experience programming CNC machines within a manufacturing environment
  • Confidence reading and interpreting engineering drawings
  • Basic 2D CAD knowledge to review and check files
  • A methodical, organised approach to managing workload and machine scheduling
  • Strong communication skills, you’ll be working across multiple teams daily

This suits someone who enjoys ownership, precision and being relied upon.

What’s on offer

  • Salary up to £35,000 depending on experience
  • Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:00
  • 28 days holiday including bank holidays, increasing with service
  • A stable, growing business with consistent workflow
  • A collaborative team environment where your work directly impacts production

This is one of those roles where, if you’re good, you become indispensable. If you take pride in getting things right, keeping production moving and being the person others rely on to make it happen, this will feel like a natural step forward.
