Have you taken ownership of bookkeeping, invoice-chasing and reconciliations? Do you take pride in getting the details right? Are you looking for a Finance Assistant role where you can get stuck in and make an impact in a growing business? This role could be for you.
Who We Are
We have been operating in Scotland since 1932, and the business looks nothing like it did when it started. Today we run an access platform fleet that includes truck‑mounted platforms up to 70 metres, rope access teams, and contracts that range from commercial window cleaning PPM programmes to inspections and other work at height maintenance tasks. We are family‑run, we are growing, and the last 18 months have seen some of the most significant capital investment in our history.
The Role
This is a brand new position. Finance at Palmer & Co has not previously been managed through a dedicated internal resource, and the business has outgrown that approach. Your job is to support the continued evolution of our finance function - invoicing, credit control, purchase orders, VAT, bank reconciliation, and the processes that tie them together. You will encounter situations without a rulebook - processes that need building, not just following, which is where you'll do some of your best work. You will manage a key client account that operates through a portal‑based work order system, handle the central finance inbox, and be the person the Directors lean on to keep the financial engine running cleanly.
The Opportunity
For the right person, this role has a clear upward trajectory. We are keen to support learning and development opportunities including professional qualifications and our long‑term ambition is to bring more financial processes in‑house as the company scales. If you want to grow into a more senior finance function over time, the platform is here.
What You Need
- Day‑to‑day, hands‑on Xero use is strongly preferred. If you've used Quickbooks, Sage or another, you could pick up Xero quickly, but it's better if you can jump straight in. We want to get more out of the system, so if you're a power user, all the better.
- Credit Control with Commercial Instinct: You know that chasing a valued client for a late payment is not the same as chasing an unknown debtor. You adjust your approach accordingly, protect relationships, and still get the business paid. That balance matters here more than most places.
- Proactivity: This business moves quickly. You spot what needs doing, you do it, and you flag anything that needs a decision rather than just letting it sit. If something is broken, you fix it, or you find the right person who can. Take initiative and get things done. Purchase orders, bank reconciliation, VAT returns, expense tracking via our existing apps. Ambition to move into management reports and other areas of Finance/Accounting as we grow.
- Communication That Works: You will be customer‑facing in this role - with clients, suppliers, and the wider team. Your written and verbal communication is professional, clear, and appropriate to the audience.
Who You'll Work With
You will work closely with the Directors and the wider operations team. We're not a big corporate - everyone plays a role, and the work you do is visible. The finance function is evolving and growing, and the people around you will notice the difference you make. You will be supported and also relied upon.
What We Offer
31 days annual leave inclusive of Christmas shutdown.
