Grizedale Arts is a small, dynamic arts charity based at Lawson Park (East of Lake, Coniston) and The Farmer’s Arms (Lowick Green). We are looking for a part-time or freelance gardener to join us.

12 hrs per week, 2 sites: Lawson Park LA21 8AD & The Farmer’s Arms LA12 8DT. PAYE or freelance options. £25,000 – £33,000 pro rata based on experience. Freelance contract by negotiation.
Start date September 2025

Lawson Park is our artists’ residency base high above Coniston Water, with a varied 3 acres or so under cultivation (in an estate of 12 acres) since 2002. These acclaimed gardens support and inspire Grizedale Arts’ creative projects, residents and volunteers, providing fresh produce for the residence and embodying the everyday creative care that is the central ethos of the organisation.

We acquired the listed pub The Farmer’s Arms in 2021 and have since been developing ornamental, productive and biodiversity–led gardens on its 6 acres.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Typical duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

General garden maintenance and management of all plantings e.g. weeding, mulching, pruning, staking, deadheading, clearing spent foliage etc
Sowing and planting including seeds, bulbs, trees
Assisting with polytunnel management and maintenance
Assisting with composting and waste disposal
Contributing to management plans
Pest and disease control through organic methods
Harvesting and processing of produce & cut flowers
Seasonal tasks e.g. watering, feeding, deck cleaning etc.
Management of habitats for biodiversity & rare species
Other grounds maintenance as necessary e.g. turf care, hedge maintenance, fencing, walling, drainage etc.
Helping prepare for garden open days and visits
Supporting garden volunteers
Deputising for the Head Gardener when required
