What we’re looking for We are looking for a person to work with our CTO to realise the technical strategy at Torchbox and enable the technical team to deliver high quality, innovative technical solutions which represent excellent value for money to our charity and public sector clients. The Head of Engineering plays a key role in: Enabling the tech team to develop applications that help our clients worldwide to achieve their goals Defining, maintaining and evolving role competencies for positions in the tech team Team skills tracking and gap analysis Recruitment to the tech team Resourcing and capacity management Line management of senior technical staff and indirect line management of the rest of the tech team Project troubleshooting; removing blockers from the development teams path to ensure high productivity on key engineering challenges Process definition, tooling, documentation, standards and consistency: driving the adoption of best practices in coding, testing and architecture Culture building and community of practice Fostering development and supporting tech team members’ performance and career progression by offering consistent guidance, mentorship, and constructive feedback Embedding new tools, techniques, programming languages and processes within the team The Torchbox technical academy programme Building leadership capabilities within the team Working closely with other specialisms at Torchbox (e.g. SEO, digital marketing, human centered design) to enable us to provide a full service experience for our clients Pitching to new and existing clients Role requirements Must have Demonstrable experience leading and growing large engineering teams A strong background as a programmer and technical architect, successfully delivering complex software builds from planning and architecture to deployment and ongoing maintenance Strong knowledge and experience of Python, Django and front end technologies such as Typescript, Node.js, React, Vue, CSS frameworks A strong understanding of AI and its application in software development Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Desirable Knowledge and experience of Wagtail CMS What we offer Become a co-owner of Torchbox, shape our success and share in the rewards Work with awesome clients doing rewarding, purposeful work Competitive salary + annual review + bonuses Ethical pension scheme, with a 6% contribution from Torchbox 27 days holiday, plus public holidays Fully remote, hybrid, office full-time, whatever works for you Training and conference budget to discover new ideas Paid time off to volunteer for causes that matter to you Health schemes and access to mental health support Electric car salary sacrifice scheme (UK only) Wellness programme and cycle-to-work scheme, alongside other lovely things that are good for you and the environment Some pretty epic socials (virtual and in-person), weekly free veggie lunches in the office and a bunch of other cool stuff we’d love to tell you about The money bit * As an employee-owned company our remuneration is made up of two parts, your base salary £63,028- £84,101 per annum and your tax-free co-owner bonus of £3,600 which is prorated and paid quarterly. There is an additional profit share scheme. The application process The closing date for this role is 22nd January 2025. The application process will consist of 3 stages, these will be: Submit your CV and a covering letter demonstrating your expertise 30-minute screening interview, held remotely. We will ask you about your background and interest in the role and you’ll get a chance to learn more about Torchbox. A 90 to 120 minute final stage interview, held remotely, with around 4 members of the Torchbox team. We will delve more into your experience and skills and ask you to spend around 20 minutes on a presentation or task we have specified to you in advance. There will be time for you to ask questions.
