JOB PURPOSE

As an Embryologist, you will be a key member of the laboratory team, responsible for delivering high-quality embryology services in line with clinical protocols and regulatory standards. Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, you will contribute to the day-to-day operation of the lab in Tingley, Leeds while ensuring patient-centred care, scientific excellence and compliance.

DUTIES AND OBJECTIVES

  • Apply and maintain aseptic techniques and adhere to cleanroom protocols and cleaning procedures
  • Prepare culture dishes, tubes and media for use in assisted conception procedures
  • Accurately complete and maintain all required laboratory documentation
  • Use the laboratory database to record, track, and analyse relevant information
  • Perform semen analysis and sperm preparation techniques for assisted conception
  • Carry out sperm cryopreservation (freezing) procedures
  • Assist with oocyte collection and culture processes
  • Undertake training in Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) if not already competent
  • Observe and assess fertilisation outcomes
  • Evaluate and score embryo morphology in line with clinical and regulatory guidelines
  • Perform embryo transfer procedures under supervision or as per competency
  • Conduct embryo vitrification and warming using established protocols
  • Participate in external quality control schemes to ensure high laboratory standards
  • Safely handle and change gas cylinders in line with safety procedures
  • Manage laboratory stock, including batch control and ordering of consumables
  • Communicate effectively with laboratory colleagues and the wider clinic team
  • Adhere to Health and Safety protocols, including COSHH regulations
  • Demonstrate understanding of risk management, including the reporting of accidents and near misses
  • Apply correct manual handling techniques in daily laboratory operations
  • Understand and comply with the regulatory role of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters level education or equivalent with a preference for a related field
  • Significant senior operational leadership experience in large healthcare providers
  • Verifiable track record performance, financial and quality improvements
  • Competence in managing large teams and financial budgets across multiple locations

CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 specifies that “No person who has a conscientious objection to participating in any activity governed by this Act shall be under any duty, however arising, to do so. In any legal proceedings the burden of proof of conscientious objection shall rest on the person claiming to rely on it.”

HEALTH & SAFETY

Employees must be aware of the responsibilities placed on them under the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974), to ensure that the agreed safety procedures are carried out to maintain a safe environment for employees and visitors.

RISK ENGAGEMENT
