Location: Barking, East London

Pay: Β£105 per day PAYE or Β£115 per day through an umbrella company

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am–4:00pm

Start date: ASAP

Contract: Full-time, ongoing with no confirmed end date

Create Education is looking for a caring, patient and reliable Male SEN Teaching Assistant/Co-Educator to join a welcoming specialist SEN school in Barking. This is a full-time position supporting young people in a Year 13 class who have a range of complex special educational needs. You will work closely with the class teacher and wider support team to help students access learning, develop their communication and independence, and prepare for adulthood.

The students may have needs including:

  • Autism and sensory processing needs
  • Severe learning difficulties
  • Profound and multiple learning difficulties
  • Speech, language and communication needs
  • Limited or non-verbal communication
  • Physical disabilities and mobility needs
  • Medical and personal care needs
  • Social, emotional and behavioural needs

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting Year 13 students individually and in small groups
  • Helping students participate in learning and personalised activities
  • Supporting the development of communication, social and independence skills
  • Using visual aids, symbols and other communication systems when required
  • Supporting students with routines, transitions and emotional regulation
  • Encouraging students to make choices and become as independent as possible
  • Providing mobility and physical support in line with individual care plans
  • Assisting with personal and intimate care while always protecting each student’s dignity, privacy and wellbeing
  • Supporting students during breaktimes, lunchtimes and activities outside the classroom
  • Following safeguarding, health and safety, behaviour-support and medical procedures
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, healthcare professionals and other support staff

About you

The successful candidate must:

  • Be male due to the personal and intimate care requirements of the pupils supported
  • Be comfortable and willing to provide respectful personal and intimate care
  • Be caring, patient, calm and emotionally resilient
  • Have a genuine interest in supporting young people with complex needs
  • Be confident supporting students with limited or non-verbal communication
  • Be able to follow individual care plans and school procedures
  • Be willing to complete any training required by the school
  • Be available full-time, Monday to Friday, from 8:30am until 4:00pm
  • Be able to commit to an ongoing placement
  • Have an enhanced child workforce DBS registered with the Update Service or be willing to apply for a new one

Previous experience in an SEN school, care setting, healthcare environment or support-work role would be highly beneficial. However, applications are also welcomed from candidates with relevant transferable skills, a compassionate approach and a genuine willingness to learn.
