A specialist engineering organisation delivering safety-critical systems across defence, nuclear, transport and industrial sectors is seeking a Senior EC&I Engineer to join its growing engineering team. This is a key hire for the business, offering the opportunity to take ownership of EC&I activities across a range of complex projects while helping to shape the future capability of the team. The business is transitioning knowledge and expertise from a long-standing contractor into a permanent team structure, creating an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer looking for autonomy, technical ownership and future leadership opportunities.
Location: Bolton, Greater Manchester (4 days on-site, Fridays remote)

The Role
Working closely with mechanical engineers, project teams and external stakeholders, you will lead the design and development of control systems for safety-critical equipment used in highly regulated environments. The role is predominantly design-focused, with occasional site visits to support surveys, installations, commissioning activities and technical troubleshooting.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing control systems, wiring schematics, panel layouts and cable schedules
- Producing EC&I drawings, calculations, technical specifications and supporting documentation
- Developing Functional Design Specifications in collaboration with cross-functional teams
- Ensuring compliance with relevant machinery safety regulations and industry standards
- Supporting fault diagnosis and technical problem-solving activities
- Conducting site surveys to assess existing systems and define modification requirements
- Collaborating with mechanical engineers, subcontractors and customers throughout the project lifecycle
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives and knowledge transfer within the engineering team
About You
We're interested in speaking with engineers who have experience in safety-critical or highly regulated environments, such as defence, nuclear, heavy engineering, industrial automation, special purpose machinery, materials handling or process industries. You will ideally have:
- Strong experience in control systems design and EC&I engineering
- Knowledge of machinery safety regulations and functional safety principles
- Experience producing electrical schematics and technical documentation
- The ability to work independently and take ownership of design activities
- Experience with PLC-controlled systems, VSDs, safety devices and interlock systems
- Knowledge of standards such as BS EN 60204, BS EN ISO 13849 and BS 7671
- Experience using AutoCAD, Inventor or similar CAD packages
- Experience carrying out hand and software-based calculations
Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:
- SISTEMA and Performance Level (PL) calculations
- Safety PLCs and programmable safety systems
- Automated access systems, industrial doors or similar equipment
- SC clearance or previous experience working within secure environments
