About the Role
We are supporting a highly respected, UK-based organisation within the trade and construction supply sector to recruit an experienced Health & Safety Manager. This is a critical position with full ownership of H&S strategy across UK operations, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer and providing regular board-level updates.
The successful candidate will act as the H&S subject matter expert, ensuring legal compliance, fostering a strong safety culture, and maintaining safe working environments across a diverse operational landscape – including two warehouses, head office staff in Rugby, and around 50 remote field-based sales staff. This is a predominantly site-based role, requiring a strong, visible presence across office and warehouse environments. Occasional remote work may be possible by exception.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead H&S compliance across all sites and functions, including office, warehouse, and remote workers
- Develop and implement the H&S strategy, supporting a culture of continuous improvement and safety-first behaviours
- Serve as the competent person for health and safety, ensuring compliance with UK legislation and industry standards
- Oversee all types of risk assessments, prioritising actions based on risk level
- Manage external audits, including ISO 45001 certification and related compliance programmes
- Maintain effective emergency preparedness and incident response plans
- Record, analyse and report on accidents, near misses and trends; lead corrective actions
- Facilitate regular Health & Safety Committee meetings and staff consultation
- Mentor and support a H&S Apprentice through their professional development
- Lead new H&S initiatives and projects across the UK operation
- Provide regular reporting to the COO and present monthly updates to the board
What We’re Looking For
- Minimum NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent) – essential
- At least 5 years’ experience in a health and safety role, preferably within warehousing or similar operational settings
- Proven experience in leading H&S programmes and managing or mentoring team members
- Strong knowledge of UK H&S legislation and risk management principles
- Hands-on experience with ISO 45001 and H&S audit processes
- Capable of writing and implementing policies, procedures and training materials
- Confident communicator with experience delivering presentations at senior level
- A practical, collaborative approach – accessible, visible, and proactive in the workplace
- Passion for driving positive safety culture and influencing behavioural change
- Exposure to facilities/building management would be advantageous for future development
