Matron in Cranleigh

Cranleigh School is a leading fully co-educational independent boarding and day Senior School consisting of around 670 girls and boys of 13 – 18 years of age. Be the calm, practical heart of our boarding house: you will keep the house running day-to-day, provide visible pastoral care for pupils on duty and lead the domestic and medical routines that keep the environment safe and comfortable. You will work early, late and Saturday shifts, liaise with Housemaster/Housemistress and Medical Centre, and coordinate cleaning, laundry and minor repairs.

What you'll be doing

• You will offer a steady pastoral presence—listening to pupils, advising where appropriate, monitoring room tidiness and reporting welfare concerns to the Housemaster/Housemistress.
• You will administer medication and provide first-contact health advice as directed by the Medical Centre, escort pupils to appointments and attend meetings with the Medical Centre Sister.
• You will manage and supervise cleaning and domestic routines, manage stock and report staffing absences, coordinate laundry and dry-cleaning processes with the Laundry Manager and Accounts Office, and check and report furnishings, fittings and maintenance issues to Facilities.
• Accurate record-keeping and daily electronic handovers on the Pastoral module (iSAMS/Socs), attendance at meetings and INSET training, observing Data Protection and other duties as directed are part of the role.

What we're looking for

• You must be comfortable with the shift pattern (early: 07:30–15:00; late: 15:00–22:00; Saturday mornings), able to travel during the day and a car owner.
• Practical pastoral skills, the ability to build trust with pupils of different ages, willingness to administer medication and undertake first-aid training, good administrative skills with Google Suite and iSAMS/Pastoral modules, and reliability in managing domestic staff are essential.
• Right to work in the UK and willingness to have an enhanced DBS are required.
• Previous boarding-house or residential-care experience, facilities or payroll liaison experience and a formal first-aid qualification are desirable.

About the team

You will join a dedicated Matrons team, reporting directly to the Head of Boarding and the Housemaster/Housemistress. While non-residential, this role works closely with the Medical Centre Sister, Facilities team, and senior boarding leadership to maintain a supportive community environment.
