3 months contract with a Local Authority

Newport City Council is seeking a Driver/General Operative (Grade 4) to join its Building Services & Maintenance / Waste Management team on a temporary 12-week contract to provide sickness cover. The role involves carrying out contractual street cleansing duties and, where operationally required, driving Council vehicles, ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with Council standards.

Key Duties/Accountabilities:

  • Carry out day-to-day street cleansing duties in line with contractual specifications and daily route schedules.
  • Drive Council vehicles in accordance with the Driver Handbook and all relevant legislation.
  • Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety regulations, including wearing PPE and Council uniform.
  • Take reasonable care for personal safety and the safety of others.
  • Report accidents, incidents, defects, and faults promptly.
  • Attend mandatory training as required.
  • Supervise Cleansing Operatives when working as part of a team.
  • Provide a professional service to members of the public, client officers, and colleagues.
  • Undertake additional driving or cleansing duties as directed by management.

Skills/Experience:

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good understanding of working within a public sector environment.
  • Strong awareness of health and safety practices.
  • Good customer service and communication skills.
  • Physically fit with stamina for walking, lifting, bending, and outdoor work.

Additional Information:

  • The closing date: 18/01/2026.
  • Full, current UK driving licence.
  • Location: Telford Street Depot, Newport, NP19 0ES.
  • Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday–Thursday: 07:30–15:30; Friday: 07:30–15:00).
