CRA Consulting is working with a well-established South Yorkshire local authority to recruit an experienced Senior Legal Officer (Planning) on a long-term locum basis. This is a senior, hands-on role offering exposure to complex planning and highways work, ideal for an experienced local government lawyer looking for stability, autonomy, and a strong day rate.
The Opportunity
Reporting into the Head of Litigation & Regulatory Services, you’ll provide high-level legal advice across planning-related matters, supporting officers and elected members across the authority. The role blends advisory work, drafting, advocacy, and leadership, making it well-suited to a confident Planning Solicitor, Barrister, or Legal Executive.
What you’ll be doing
- Advising on Town & Country Planning, Highway Law (including footpaths), and Compulsory Purchase
- Drafting Section 106 agreements, enforcement notices, planning injunctions, reports, and court documents
- Conducting advocacy before Courts, Tribunals, Inquiries, and Panels
- Deputising for senior legal colleagues where required
- Delivering training to legal teams, officers, partners, and elected members
- Managing matters in line with internal policies and case management systems

- Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of CILEX with a current practising certificate
- Strong Planning Law experience within a local authority environment
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills
