We are looking for a Development Engineer to join our team in Wantage, Oxfordshire. The teams work on the development of a range of metal cans for beverage, food, and aerosol applications and their associated manufacturing processes. They are responsible for delivering new and improved products and processes, and providing technical support to Crown’s global manufacturing operations.

As a key member of a small team of experts, the Development Engineer will be engaged in engineering project work, to develop and improve metal packaging products and manufacturing processes, from ideas and concepts, through development and on to implementation in a Crown plant. You will be required to use 3D CAD packages to produce engineering drawings of products, tooling/machine parts, and specification documents for new can manufacturing projects. You will plan, organise and conduct development work in the pilot facility in Wantage, manufacturing prototype samples for testing, demonstration and customer trials.

You will be responsible for completing laboratory measurements of critical dimensional and performance parameters, analysing results, and writing and issuing technical reports. With experience, there is expectation in the medium term to grow the role into managing projects, and liaising with key contacts in Crown’s operations.

Job Requirements:

In order to succeed in this role, you will likely be educated to a degree level in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Alternatively, you may have developed your engineering skills through a formal apprenticeship combined with other further education. Ideally you will have a proven track record in a relevant mechanical manufacturing/development engineering role, with strong mechanical design ability and familiarity of 3D CAD packages (Solidworks would be an advantage).

You will have practical hands-on capability with mechanical equipment, in order to complete precision set-ups, and test tooling you have designed in the pilot facility. You will be an excellent problem solver with the enthusiasm to get involved in all levels of engineering work from design to hands-on practical work. You will be a strong communicator with the ability to present project updates across all levels of the business. It is important that you can demonstrate the ability to manage work programmes/projects through team working, whilst adhering to challenging deadlines.

A second European language would be desirable but is not essential. Occasional travel will be required to visit Crown manufacturing sites or suppliers for short periods of time within the Europe, Americas and Asia Pacific regions.

If you think you have what it takes to succeed in the role, we would like to hear from you. We’ll match your contribution to our business with an ongoing commitment to your career development.
