We are working with a leading organisation in Cardiff to appoint a seasoned Data Centre Operations Engineer, specifically with technical proficiency in BMC Control‑M scheduling and experience working in a Microfocus environment.
Location: South Wales (On‑Site).
Type: Contract, 6+ months.
IR35 Determination: Inside IR35.
Pay Rate: £250–£280 per day.
Start: ASAP / Urgent.
Working as part of a 4 on / 4 off rotational shift team, the role requires on‑site work in a 12‑hour shift pattern of both days and nights. Once up to speed, some remote working will be available.
Role Responsibilities
- Systems monitoring and management
- Observing monitoring consoles and event‑driven alerts
- Coordinating with vendors when support calls are raised for assistance
- Respond to out‑of‑hours incidents effectively and promptly
- Taking corrective action for agreed and documented administrative systems
- Running and monitoring traditional batch schedules, including using automated tools (e.g. Control‑M, Visualcron)
- Running release jobs/scripts to release development changes into production
- Physical management of bulk printing machines
- Daily removal of tapes and boxing up for off‑siting
- Test access to systems to prove availability
- Ensure security and access procedures are maintained and followed
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in batch processing and job scheduling using BMC Control‑M (or similar)
- Proven experience in a Data Centre / Comms Room environment
- Understanding of JCL
- Proficiency in Korn Shell scripting
- Knowledge of Linux and Unix commands
- Basic knowledge of Oracle and associated database structures
- ITIL Fundamentals
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a 24/7 live environment
- Experience in root‑cause analysis and break‑fix resolution
- Confidence working both independently and as part of a dedicated support team
