The Branch Library Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of a library branch, supervising up to 15 staff members while ensuring high-quality services for the local community. The role focuses on delivering excellent customer service, promoting learning and literacy, managing staff, and maintaining a safe, welcoming library environment.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service & Library Operations
- Ensure library services are delivered to a high standard and follow Libraries NI policies.
- Help customers access books, digital resources, information, and reference services.
- Promote reading, literacy, and library services for children, adults, older people, and people with disabilities.
- Oversee stock management, circulation systems, and day-to-day library operations.
- Handle first-stage customer complaints and maintain service statistics.
Community Engagement
- Promote the library as a community hub for learning, information, leisure, and culture.
- Maintain relationships with local groups and organisations using library facilities.
- Manage community information and the branch events ('What's On') diary.
Staff Management
- Supervise, motivate, and appraise library assistants and support staff.
- Manage rotas, timesheets, attendance, and staff welfare.
- Identify training needs and provide induction and refresher training.
- Support staff development through ongoing learning and appraisal.
Premises & Administration
- Ensure the library building is safe, clean, secure, and well maintained.
- Monitor health and safety compliance and report major issues.
- Oversee financial procedures, records, equipment, signage, bookings, and supplies.
- Act as Duty Officer when required and ensure emergency procedures are followed.

Qualifications & Experience
Applicants must have either:
- Two GCE A Levels (or an equivalent/higher qualification) plus at least 2 years' experience working with the public in a customer-focused role within the last 5 years,
OR
- At least 3 years' experience working with the public in a customer-focused role within the last 6 years.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate experience of:
- Delivering and promoting front-line customer services to a wide range of people.
- Using modern ICT systems and applications in the workplace.
- Working collaboratively with internal colleagues and/or external organisations or customers.
- Working effectively as part of a team to achieve organisational goals.
Other Requirements
- Flexibility to work a variety of shifts, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends, and at different library locations as required to meet business needs.
