Role Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Learning and Communication Support Assistant (LCSA) to support learners with complex needs in the classroom. The successful candidate will work closely with learners who may have a range of conditions including autism, epilepsy, physical disabilities (e.g., wheelchair users), and challenging behaviours. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a passion for working in an educational environment and supporting individuals to access their learning and thrive. You will work alongside teaching staff to ensure the learners are supported in their academic, social, and personal development within the classroom setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one or small group support to students with complex needs in the classroom.
- Support students with physical needs, including assisting with mobility, personal care, and positioning as necessary (e.g., wheelchair users).
- Implement and follow individualised care plans to support students with medical conditions, such as epilepsy or other health concerns.
- Assist in the delivery of tailored educational activities that meet the specific needs of each student.
- Support students with autism, challenging behaviours, and sensory needs, using de-escalation techniques when required.
- Foster an inclusive, positive, and respectful classroom environment, ensuring that all students feel supported and valued.
- Provide support for students during break times, ensuring their safety and engagement.
- Help students with tasks such as note-taking, communication, and using assistive technology or resources.
- Work closely with teachers, learning support teams, and external professionals to monitor and report on student progress.
- Help promote social interaction and independence, encouraging students to engage in a variety of school activities.
Key Skills and Experience
- Experience working with students with complex needs, including those with physical disabilities, autism, and challenging behaviours.
- Knowledge of epilepsy and other medical conditions, and the ability to provide appropriate support.
- Understanding of de-escalation techniques and positive behaviour support strategies.
- Experience using assistive technologies or equipment to support students.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents/carers.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Patience, empathy, and the ability to stay calm and focused in challenging situations.
- Team player who works collaboratively with colleagues to ensure the best outcomes for students.
Desirable Qualifications
- Relevant qualifications in education, special educational needs (SEN), or healthcare (e.g., NVQ Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent).
- First Aid training or willingness to undergo training.
- Training in safeguarding or child protection.
