Senior Mechanical Engineer – Plant Team Conveyor Lead

Role
We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to manage belt conveyor related topics/tasks. It’s essential to have a central focal point and contact for the extensive belt conveyor system in Area central. The belt conveyors are a critical single point failure system. Maintaining high levels, 95% plus machine availability will be essential for the 5 no TBMs in operation dependent on it. This can only be achieved by having an engineering focal point and an excellent team of conveyor mechanics and electricians keeping a watching brief 24/7, undertaking maintenance, tracking, and managing the £1 million plus spare parts package.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for remaining conveyor surface installations and the ongoing operation and maintenance of the current installations.
  2. Manage the spare parts alongside the store personnel ensuring parts are ready when needed and stocks are sufficient.
  3. Be a general central focal point for ALL conveyor related issues i.e., breakdowns, noise management, shutdown management, required documentation (e.g., regular updates of RAMS, ITP’s, TBS etc).
  4. Manage S4 interface with regards to a shared conveyor structure, this includes regular updates of the Interface Control document (ICD).
  5. Manage ROWA – Subcontractor supplying conveyor structure. Be ROWA’s first point of contact, manage the whole ROWA subcontract, including EWN’s & ROWA personnel on site.
  6. Manage Interfaces to Network Rail, GUC (Grand Union Canal) and WET logistic team.
  7. Support directly employed Fitters and Electricians ensuring their needs are met in terms of plant, equipment, and materials.
  8. Enforce the maintenance schedule and monitor compliance.
  9. Check the work of maintenance technicians to ensure carried out in line with manufacturer’s instructions and best practice.
  10. Ensure the maintenance teams have up-to-date and relevant information such as drawings, O&M manuals, dismantling methodologies, specialist tools and equipment to undertake maintenance works.
  11. Support the Plant Manager and Tunnel Manager with other tasks and activities as required.
  12. Produce maintenance check sheets, schedules, plan machine downtime activities and manage spare parts.
  13. Implement, administer, set-up and manage the projects chosen CMMS. Be an integral part in CMMS inception and use across all sites.
  14. Working alongside the Mechanical, Electrical and Construction Superintendents to ensure maintenance is carried out on time, downtime is scheduled, sufficient personnel both in number and competence are available to conduct works.
  15. Propose and see through to completion modifications and improvements to plant where necessary to improve safety and increase machine availability.
  16. Monitor and inspect plant to ensure fit-for-purpose. Make certain any third-party checks and certificates are in place such as statutory inspections.

Required Qualifications, Skills

  1. A Mechanical background with plant maintenance and welding works experience within the tunnelling, underground, heavy plant sector is essential.
  2. Excellent working knowledge of materials, specifications and industry working practices.
  3. Meet the requirements of UK-SPEC at the Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer Level.
  4. A minimum bachelor’s degree (grade 2:1 minimum) in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  5. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a proven track record of production management, with a strong technical ability for applying their underpinning knowledge and experience to solving problems including new technologies and innovations for complex engineering systems.
  6. Experience related to areas including bulk material handling, hydraulic systems, pressurized pipework, instrumentation and control, electronics and electrical systems, static and fluid design, and testing and commissioning, will be of value in this role.
  7. Must have strong interpersonal skills communicating technical matters, able to speak with employees, managers of different disciplines and senior management.
  8. Readiness to evaluate alternatives and make decisions even when all the information required is not available.
  9. A capacity to manage change, identify problems, their causes, and practical solutions.
  10. Ensure the equipment and machinery availability and overall utilization targets are met.
  11. Proactively engage with equipment and parts suppliers to ensure that their expertise contributes to the effective operation of production equipment and resolution of problems.
  12. Ensure compliance with project policies, procedures, and standards regarding finance, health and safety, quality, and human resources.
