Overview

Head of Discipline – Tunnel, Civil and Underground Engineering. London. Permanent, office/home hybrid working. Create solutions that will enable a better tomorrow. To support the growth of our UK business, we are looking for a Head of Discipline for our Tunnel, Civil and Underground Engineering team. You will manage a team of civil and structural engineers as part of our UK&I Tunnel, Civil and Underground Engineering discipline management team. Staff design solutions for tunnel and below ground structures across water, rail, utilities, highways and energy sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of civil and structural engineers within the Tunnel, Civil and Underground Engineering discipline, with responsibility for technical and professional development, performance management and coaching outside of project work.
  • Align capability and capacity of the office team with wider discipline needs, ensuring effective day-to-day utilization of time and skills. Lead recruitment in line with discipline growth strategy.
  • Collaborate with the Lower Thames Crossing project team to align skills and integration.
  • Support the Discipline Leadership Team by modelling leadership, promoting a high-performance, diverse and inclusive culture.

As an experienced tunnel, civil or structural engineer, you will also:

  • Provide technical leadership across current projects.
  • Maintain custodianship of heavy civil engineering competencies, apply best practices, and direct technical innovations.
  • Mentor and develop engineering staff, deliver training, share knowledge, and support succession planning.
  • Promote COWI\’s position through industry involvement, technical publications, and enabling others to participate.
  • Provide technical approval of designs and deliverables in line with internal management systems.
  • Support business development and contribute to bids and tenders as required.

Requirements

  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng or equivalent), working toward or having Fellowship of a professional body.
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or MSc in Civil Engineering (with tunnel/structural focus) or equivalent degree.
  • Experience in a similar role with technical, commercial, business development and line management responsibilities.
  • Experience in major or complex heavy civils projects in the UK & Ireland or internationally at senior/leadership level.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards and application of sector codes for highways, rail, energy and water.
  • Understanding of construction and site processes, including shaft/tunnel construction, micro-tunnelling, water/wastewater treatment, historic structures, asset management, foundations and rail structures.
  • Experience guiding project teams and delivering technical outputs as client’s or contractor’s designer.
  • Proven people leadership, communication, and ability to engage and develop civil, structural and tunnel engineers.
