We seek an experienced terrestrial ecologist to join our sustainability team and support the delivery of environmental issues for infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland.
Responsibilities
- Work with engineering teams to integrate ecological and wider environmental best practices, including nature‑based solutions, into major energy and infrastructure projects.
- Support the environmental/sustainability screening of projects to identify risks and opportunities.
- Provide specialist advice and support to project teams on ecology and environmental issues.
- Review Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and advise design teams and clients on project integration.
- Collaborate with COWI’s network of Biodiversity Champions to share learning and best practice.
- Support internal training initiatives around nature‑based solutions.
- Assist the wider Sustainability team on related projects as required.
Qualifications
- Degree in Ecology, Environmental Impact Assessments or a related topic.
- Experience working on large infrastructure projects, dealing with clients, regulators and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of terrestrial and freshwater UK habitats and their challenges in a changing climate.
- Preferably experience working in the Scottish Highlands or similar habitats.
- Strong UK terrestrial ecology background and broad knowledge of environmental issues linked to infrastructure projects.
- Professional membership of CIEEM.
- Knowledge of UK & Ireland ecology legislation and terrestrial habitat management techniques.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills.
- Experience using the DEFRA Statutory Biodiversity Net Gain Metric.
