As a Harbour Patrol Officer, you’ll take on a dynamic, customer-facing role, working both independently and as part of a close-knit team. Your primary responsibility will be to patrol Cowes Harbour waters, including upriver pontoons and moorings, ensuring compliance for harbour users and visiting public with the General Directions. Additionally, you’ll collect short-stay mooring fees and provide guidance, education, and support to harbour users and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Educate and enforce Cowes Harbour General Directions and other regulations while engaging with harbour users.
- Promote and maintain a safety-first culture, ensuring the highest standards of Health and Safety are upheld for all harbour users and colleagues.
- Offer professional advice to vessels facing navigation, propulsion, or safety challenges, including guidance on available moorings.
- Represent Cowes Harbour Commission as an ambassador, providing excellent customer service.
- Collect mooring fees promptly and accurately while assisting vessels using Cowes Harbour moorings and anchorages with the online payment system.
- Respond effectively and appropriately to emergency situations as directed.
- Conduct regular and statutory patrols, inspections, and maintenance of Cowes Harbour assets, visiting vessels, and mooring lines, recording and reporting findings.
- Perform non-emergency towage of vessels within the harbour.
- Support other Cowes Harbour teams when required.
About You
We’re looking for a proactive and motivated team player with a strong commitment to Health and Safety. You’ll have excellent multitasking skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities. Previous experience in a marine environment is desirable, along with proven boat-handling skills.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
- GCSE Maths and English at grade 4/C or higher.
- RYA Powerboat Level 2 certification.
- RYA First Aid qualification (or equivalent).
- Experience in a marine or similar environment.
- Strong customer service background.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
General Information
This is a full-time seasonal position. Due to the nature of the role, flexibility is required during peak periods, including weekends, evenings, and Bank Holidays. Advance notice will be provided.
Further hourly rate details: From April 01 the rate will increase from £13.21 - £13.71 ph. The role will be based at Shepards Marina, Cowes.

As the island’s principal port, Cowes handles a diverse range of commercial shipping activities, vehicle and passenger ferries, and high-speed ferry operations. Renowned for its pivotal role in the world of yacht racing and leisure sailing, Cowes welcomes a vast array of resident and visiting pleasure boats annually. Cowes Harbour is a Trust Port, managed for the benefit of its users. Without shareholders or external owners, the Commission operates independently, receiving no funding from local or national government. Instead, it is entirely self-funded through harbour dues and commercial activities, which include Kingston Boatyard, Shepards Marina, River Medina moorings, a fuel barge, and the afloat team’s contract work.
