Location: Locations across Coventry and Warwickshire, with the main office being in Coventry.

Salary: £12.52 per hour

Hours: This is a sessional position, so hours are on an ad-hoc basis (zero hour contract).

About the service: The aim of the YBM project is to promote empowerment, increase resilience and help address some of the issues that affect young Black men aged 11–30 and their families. The Young Black Men project offers group and one-to-one support. It is free to access, delivered across schools, community spaces and places of worship, and designed to be culturally appropriate. The project accepts both self‑referrals, parent/carer referrals and professional referrals. It also provides opportunities to work in partnership with other groups and organisations working with young Black men and their families.

About the role: Connecting with young Black men aged 11–30 and their families in Coventry and Warwickshire. This role is about meeting people where they are, in their communities, through culturally affirming approaches that build trust, break down stigma, and strengthen wellbeing. Due to the requirement to meet the cultural needs of young Black males, we are looking for applications from men who identify as part of the Black community or have black heritage and who understand the systemic and cultural barriers that impact the mental health of young Black men and their families. Exemption is claimed under the Equality Act 2010, Schedule 9, Part 1. This role is about more than just support, it’s about empowerment, representation and voice.

Key responsibilities:

  • To engage young adults from a model of trusting and respectful relationship building, including those who may be underrepresented or have had little contact with services.
  • To provide people accessing the service, their families and professionals with an awareness of mental health along with the skills and knowledge to manage their mental health and emotional wellbeing effectively, including via the use of technology.
  • To hold a caseload of people to deliver 1:1 support to, effectively managing all contact and correspondence with the supervision of the Team Leader/Service Manager.
  • To work with the team to manage waiting list times and demands placed on the service support delivery.
  • Establish a culture of inclusivity throughout all service delivery where all are welcome and supported to thrive within the service, with the targeted group being at the forefront.
  • To empower young adults to make decisions and choices regarding possible ways forward e.g. referring or working alongside other services to more suitably support people accessing the service.
  • To ensure completion of all relevant paperwork, including assessment and evidence via evaluation tools/scales e.g. Goal Based Outcomes (GBOs).
  • To develop and maintain positive professional relationships with other agencies and services, travelling throughout Coventry and Warwickshire (these may include schools, colleges, universities, community spaces/venues, places of worship etc.).
  • To promote and implement Coventry, Warwickshire and Worcestershire Mind’s (CWW Mind) policies and procedures training as agreed or directed.
  • To support young people already using mental health services with the transition process from Children to Adult services ensuring any potential barriers or challenges are addressed.

Requirements:

  • Lived experience or deep understanding of the challenges and strengths within Black communities.
  • Experience working directly with young people and/or families in community or youth settings.
  • Confidence facilitating honest, culturally grounded conversations about mental health.
  • Knowledge of how systemic and cultural issues affect the wellbeing of young Black men.
  • Experience of working with people who are from isolated communities.
  • Experience of delivering services within an urban and ethnically diverse context, developing and delivering interventions to these groups.
  • A commitment to inclusion, empowerment and community connection.
  • The flexibility to adapt your hours to best support young people (within our 8am–8pm service).
  • A driving License and access to a vehicle. (You will require valid business insurance).
