About the team we are recruiting to

The Pest Control & Dog Enforcement Team deal with over 2000 requests for domestic pest control treatments including rats, mice, bed bugs, fleas, and wasps, service over 500 commercial pest control management contracts, manage over 300 stray dogs per year, licence all pet establishments within the city boundaries, and enforce the Public Space Protection Orders for dog control. The team works closely with other partners including RSPCA, Police, dog rehoming centres, and other internal sections including the food safety team and the street enforcement team. The service has a statutory duty to seize stray dogs from public areas and ensure the wellbeing of dogs in its care under the care act.

What is the job role?

In this role, you will be assisting in the day-to-day supervision of a team of pest control & dog enforcement officers, responding to requests for domestic and commercial pest control services, assisting with the day-to-day operations of our stray dog kennels, and enforcing our public space protection orders (dog control).

The duties of these roles will involve:

  • Assisting with the supervision and day-to-day running of the pest control and dog enforcement team
  • Responding to requests for pest control treatments in domestic and commercial properties
  • Servicing commercial pest management contracts to ensure businesses are kept free from damage by pests
  • Responding to and seizing stray or unsupervised dogs from public areas, some of which may be aggressive and dangerously out of control
  • Ensuring the wellbeing of any dogs in our kennels including exercising, cleaning, feeding, and general kennel duties
  • Collection of fines and costs associated with kennelling costs
  • Enforcing the Public Space Protection Orders (Dog Control), which will include carrying out surveillance and issuing fixed penalty notices to offenders
  • Keeping up to date records and recording actions taken

Who are we looking for?

The successful candidate will:

  • Be reliable and committed
  • Have a professional attitude and be willing to take on the tasks and duties within the remit of the role and service area
  • Be customer-focused and able to remain respectful, calm, and polite in environments where they may experience challenging behaviours or situations when assisting the general public and customers by responding to queries and complaints
  • Be confident to take appropriate action to avoid formal complaints

In addition, you must have:

  • A full UK driving licence
  • RSPH Certificate or equivalent for pest control
  • Knowledge and experience in dealing with a variety of pests
  • Experience in dealing with pests in commercial businesses
  • Training and experience in dealing with dogs
  • Ability to work with dogs that may be unpredictable, awkward, or aggressive
  • Experience in working with the public
  • Good team working skills
  • Ability to drive a council vehicle
