About the Adult Education Service

The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council and offers a wide range of courses for Coventry residents 19+ and many of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need.

Job Summary

1 x 0.8 FTE (4 days: 9 am‑5 pm) permanent English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Citywide/Peripatetic Learning Support Assistant post. The role includes approximately 5 hours a day in class support and the remainder for onsite curriculum, administrative and record‑keeping duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support adult learners with a disability, learning difficulties or pre‑literacy needs to fully access ESOL classes.
  • Work with small groups or individuals under the direction of a tutor to enable learners to progress in their ESOL courses.
  • Assist learners in learning relevant language for everyday life and in beginning to read and write in English.
  • Complete after‑class duties including copying, resource preparation, contacting non‑attending learners and updating and evidencing Additional Learning Support and Individual Learning Plans.
  • Deliver services in community venues such as Family Hubs, libraries, schools, VCS organisations and outreach locations; travel between delivery sites is standard.
  • Maintain academic confidentiality and uphold the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Right to work in the UK; no sponsorship offered.
  • Experience working with adult ESOL learners and an understanding of their diverse needs.
  • Positive attitude towards equality of opportunity and a flexible, adaptable approach to meeting changing learner needs.
  • Experience working with pre‑literate adults is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of the barriers to learning faced by ESOL adult learners.

  • Job is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 with mandatory DBS checks.

Location & Working Conditions

Main base at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ; courses also delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need. Role requires travel to multiple venues each day – up to three different locations ranging from classroom support to administrative centre. Work is year‑round; courses run during school holidays.
