About the Team
The successful candidate will work in our Regulatory Services team, which includes Licensing, Trading Standards, Food and Safety, Housing Enforcement and Property Licensing specialisms. This team provides a range of services for the community, primarily dealing with people, businesses or organisations that need consent or must comply with legal provisions.
Job Role
- Deliver a high‑quality Business Compliance and Advice service, contributing to the City Council’s vision and objectives for a growing and sustainable city.
- Enforce all relevant legislation administered by the section, and educate and encourage the public and business proprietors to improve relevant standards.
- Undertake investigations of complaints and inspections of premises, including joint inspections with other agencies, to ensure compliance with legislation.
- Prepare reports and briefing notes for relevant committee and member meetings, such as Licensing and Regulatory Committee, Cabinet Member Meetings and Scrutiny Board; provide technical support to the Chair of Committee, Cabinet Member and Senior Officers.
- Provide first‑line contact, offer appropriate assistance, advice and support for members of the public and businesses, including outside agencies, elected members, senior officers and other Council departments, making telephone enquiries or calling in person; deliver professional and legally correct advice and information.
- Prepare statements of evidence and correspondence to be submitted to Legal Services, and attend Court as required to give evidence and report back on the outcome.
- Interview alleged offenders and witnesses under PACE as required.
Qualifications and Experience
- A fully qualified Trading Standards Officer with experience of carrying out investigative work in an enforcement environment.
- Knowledge and understanding of legislation and Codes of Practice (including PACE) in relation to Trading Standards and Consumer Protection and associated regulations and policy relevant to the service area.
- Experience of all areas of Trading Standards work is essential.
- Ability to build relationships with businesses and customers, and excellent standards of customer care and equal opportunities when delivering the business compliance function.
