Role Overview
Our Waste Services Team delivers one of the most essential services our residents rely on every day – ensuring household waste is collected, treated, recycled and disposed of safely and efficiently. We provide domestic, recycling and garden waste collections to more than 126,000 households across the city, completing over 9 million collections each year and collecting more than 100,000 tonnes of waste annually. In addition to day‑to‑day operations, the team leads key environmental initiatives that support residents in participating positively in the services provided.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise frontline teams to deliver high‑quality waste and environmental services across the city.
- Work closely with the Waste & Recycling Manager to ensure services are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with customer expectations and service standards.
- Oversee the day‑to‑day deployment of staff, vehicles and resources, ensuring operational priorities are met and that services are completed on time and within budget.
- Monitor performance, maintain high standards of health and safety, support employee development and manage attendance, wellbeing and conduct matters.
- Drive continuous improvement, promote a customer‑focused culture and play an active role in service planning and innovation.
- Deputise for the Operational Manager when required.
- Serve on a rota covering 1 in 7 Saturdays and be willing to obtain an HGV Class 2 licence within 12 months if not already held.
Qualifications
- Experience of supervising teams, including planning and organising workloads.
- Experience of working in a customer‑focused operational service environment.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to monitor performance, manage resources and meet operational targets.
- Experience of dealing with employee matters such as attendance, performance and conduct issues.
- Good ICT skills and experience using Microsoft Office and other operational systems.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and a commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
- An understanding of effective people management practices, including recruitment, training and development.
- A full current driving licence.
- Ideally, formal supervisory training or relevant qualifications and experience within waste management, environmental services, fleet operations, or a similar frontline service environment.
- Positive, resilient and adaptable attitude, leading by example and committed to delivering excellent public services.
